SHHRC Insight Grant (PI), “Gender Inequality in Retirement: Understanding Social Organization in Domestic Tasks” 2023

The project aims to bridge the gap in theoretical knowledge regarding the persistence of gendered patterns in domestic work among retired Canadians in opposite-sex couples. Despite advances over the 20th century, women continue to undertake most household chores into older age and retirement. This three-year study will analyze how domestic work is divided and shared among retired couples, exploring the underlying mechanisms of this division. By analyzing secondary data, conducting in-depth interviews, and engaging stakeholders in co-design sessions, the project aims to develop a comprehensive theoretical framework to understand gender inequality in domestic tasks post-retirement. The findings are expected to inform policy recommendations and contribute to the overall understanding of gender inequality and aging, addressing a significant gap in our current theoretical landscape concerning non-working populations.
