External Funding
Following is a list of the main external funding competitions available to Sociology students. Students are encouraged to view the full list on the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies' (SGPS) web site. SGPS provides information sessions and other forms of support for scholarship applicants. A sampling of past successful OGS and SSHRC plans of study are available to Sociology graduate students in OWL. See left side panel for details.
Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) at Western University
Designed to encourage excellence in graduate studies at the master's and doctoral levels, the Ontario Graduate Scholarship Program is jointly funded between the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities and matched funding through donations to The University of Western Ontario.
Deadline for Application: Western's 2023-2024 OGS application opens December 7, 2022 and will close at 4:00 p.m. EST on February 1, 2023. The School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies' web site provides details regarding eligibility, etc. Students applying to a graduate program at Western will have access to the web services portal once they complete and submit the program application. A program application and an OGS application must be completed for each program to which an applicant applies.
Note that each Ontario university manages its own OGS process. Students must apply to each university separately and adhere to the respective regulations and deadlines.
Social Science and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Doctoral Competition
The SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships programs seek to develop research skills and assist in the training of highly-qualified personnel in the social sciences and humanities.
Students may apply to only one federal competition (i.e., either SSHRC or CIHR). Students pursuing health-related research should consult the Subject Matter Eligiblity to determine the appropriate competition for their research.
Applications sent directly to SSHRC from students registered at a Canadian university will not be accepted. Please visit the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies' web site for details regarding this competition as well as a link to the online application form.
Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Doctoral Competition
Students may apply to only one federal competition (i.e., either SSHRC or CIHR). Students pursuing health-related research should consult the Subject Matter Eligiblity to determine the appropriate competition for their research. Please consult the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies' web site for details regarding the CIHR application deadlines and process.
Canada Graduate Scholarship Master's Competition
Applications are completed online and must be completed by 8pm December 1. Please visit the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies' web site for details regarding this competition as well as a link to the online application form.
