February 3, 2012   Danièle Bélanger was an invited speaker at the University of Ottawa. She presented "Weddings and Migration in Asia: the Trafficking of Women for Subjective Agency".

January 20, 2012 D. Bélanger presented 'Debt, Labor and Mobility: Vietnamese Labor Migrants Bound to East Asia’ at an International workshop entitled The Bonds of Migration: Debt, Interpendence and Mobility. University of Chicago, Paris.

Oct 24-28, 2011 A world-renowned scholar of migration, Dr. Nicola Piper, from the University of Frieberg was hosted by Danièle Bélanger at Western. During her stay Dr. Piper gave two talks; Geographies of Migration, Geographies of Justice? Feminism, Intersectionality and Rights and Global Governance of Migration and the Migrant Rights Movement.

Oct 18-23, 2011 Danièle Bélanger presented Marriage Migration and Social Change: Transnationalism from Below at the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population Conference on Marriage migration in a global world held in South Korea.

May - August, 2011Danièle Bélanger oversaw fieldwork conducted in Leamington, Ontario on undocumented migrant workers from Mexico.  This is a joint research project with co-investigator Dr. Tanya Basok and is funded by CERIS - The Ontario Metropolis Centre.

  Vietnam

May - August, 2011A new research project on migrant workers was developed by Danièle Bélanger in partnership with two researchers in Quebec (Geneviève Roberge and Maxime Amar). Danièle managed, as well as conducted the fieldwork with the aid of two research assistants.

March, 2012 Danièle Bélanger will present papers at the MERIS Metropolis conference in Toronto, March 3, as well as on March 17th at the Association of Asian Studies.

March 2012 Danièle Bélanger will travel to Vietnam to present a report to NGO's and government officials. The report, 'Closing the Gender Gap in Vietnam? An Analysis Based on the Vietnam Census, 1989, 1999 and 2009', was created with the assistance of statisticians from the General Statistics office in Hanoi, Vietnam and Thi Van Nguyen and Linh Giang Tran from the Institute for Social Development Studies in Vietnam.
