Module Information

Sociology and Criminology modules can be completed on their own or combined with other modules as a 3 year or 4 year degree. Please review the list of approved module combinations and degree types. Choosing the module and degree that is right for you is dependent on your level of interest in Sociology, future education/career goals and academic achievements.

Sociology Module Options:

Admissions Requirements: Students must complete 1.0 credits in Sociology at the 1000-level to enter the module. The 1.0 credit 1000-level requirement can be fulfilled by: A) one 1.0 credit course (Sociology 1020, Sociology 1021E) OR B) two 0.5 credit courses (Sociology 1025A/B, Sociology 1026F/G, Sociology 1027A/B) with no mark below 60% in these course(s). Students must request entry into the module during Intent to Register in March.

Honours Admissions Requirements:

Students must have an average of at least 70% in 3.0 principal courses, including 1.0 credits in Sociology at the 1000-level. The 1.0 credit 1000-level requirement can be fulfilled by: A) one 1.0 credit course (Sociology 1020, Sociology 1021E,) OR B) two 0.5 credit courses (Sociology 1025A/B, Sociology 1026F/G, Sociology 1027A/B,) plus 2.0 additional 1000 level credits, with no mark in these courses below 60%. Students must complete the 5.0 1000-level first-year requirements with no failures. Students must request entry into the module during Intent to Register in March.

Enrollment in the Honours Specialization is limited. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee that students will be offered enrollment.

Honours Progression Requirements: Students accepted into the module must maintain a 70% module average each year. Students must achieve a minimum mark of 60% in each module course and have no failed courses in any subject each year. Students who do not meet the progression requirements will be removed from the Honours module. Re-admission to an Honours module is possible. Criminology Module Options

Admissions Requirements: Students must complete 1.0 credits in Sociology at the 1000-level to enter the module. The 1.0 credit 1000-level requirement can be fulfilled by: A) one 1.0 credit course (Sociology 1020, Sociology 1021E,) OR B) two 0.5 credit courses (Sociology 1025A/B, Sociology 1026F/G, Sociology 1027A/B,) with no mark below 60% in these course(s). Students must request entry into the module during Intent to Register in March.

Major

* New admission to the Criminology major is closed for the 2026-2027 academic year and beyond. Students enrolled in the Criminology major as of September 1 2026 or earlier are permitted to continue in the module. Please review the Criminology FAQ for more information.

 

Double Major

Admissions Requirements: Students must complete 1.0 courses at the 1000-level to enter the module (Sociology 1020, Sociology 1021E, Sociology 1025A/B, Sociology 1026F/G, Sociology 1027A/B,) with no mark below 60%. Students must request entery into the module during Intent to Register in March.

Module Requirements: The Double Major in Sociology and Criminology consists of 11.0 credits in a 4-year Bachelor’s degree.

Note: Students who entered the module in 2021 or earlier may follow either the previous module requirements or the new 2022-present module requirements. The 2022-present module allows for more course enrollment flexibility.

 

Honours Double Major

Admissions Requirements: Students must have an average of at least 70% in 3.0 principal courses, including 1.0 from: Sociology 1020, Sociology 1021E, Sociology 1025A/B, Sociology 1026F/G, Sociology 1027A/B, plus 2.0 additional courses, with no mark in these courses below 60%. Students must complete first-year requirements (5.0 1000 level credits) with no failures. Students must request entery into the module during Intent to Register in March.

Progression Requirements: Students must maintain a 70% module average with no mark below 60% in each module course and have no failed courses in any subject. Students who do not meet the progression requirements will be removed from the Honours Specialization module.

Module Requirements: The Honours Double Major in Sociology and Criminology consists of 11.0 credits in Sociology and is part of a 4-year Honours Bachelor’s degree.
