Population Change and Lifecourse

Knowledge Translation and Synthesis Training Workshop

New scholars attend pilot workshop

New professors and researchers and Ph.D students attended a pilot workshop on communicating quantitative social science research findings at the University of Western Ontario on April 3-4.

John Flanders, Senior Media Advisor at Statistics Canada provided theoretical and practical training on press release writing on the first day of the workshop.

On the second day, Heather Juby, Knowledge Transfer Coordinator of the Research Data Centre Network, gave a training on using visual tools to assist communication.

Using his/her own  research paper, each participant prepared a media release and a PowerPoint presentation, which were commented and improved upon by John and Heather.

The participants came from different disciplines -- sociology, business, economics, nursing, and psychology-- and from various parts of the country. All were motivated by the desire to communicate their research findings to a wider audience, and all were very positive about the tools they acquired during the workshop.

The 2-day workshop is part of the Knowledge Translation and Synthesis Training, a joint project of the Population Change and Lifecourse Strategic Knowledge Cluster and the Research Data Centre Network. The experience from the workshop will inform the planning for subsequent project activities.

Some comments from the participants

“This workshop was very useful in terms of educating researchers on how to effectively communicate their findings to the layman who may not have the background and expertise to understand the science of research.”

“A change of mind from the ivory tower to the general public. Expect more workshops like this in the future".”
