BC Network for Aging Research
Alain Gagnon was a guest speaker at the conference "Opportunities at the Crossroads of Scientific Discovery: Design and Analysis of Longitudinal Data for Interdisciplinary Research Across the Life span" (Vancouver, January 28-29 2010). The title of his presentation was "The long term legacy of early life: Linking censuses to civil registration to assess how conditions experienced in infancy and childhood affect survival in old ages".
2009-2010 Alain Gagnon On Sabatical
Alain Gagnon was previously invited to present his research on the late life legacy of early life in Sweden on October 8, 2009 at the Centre for Economic Demography in Lund, where he was based during the first half of his sabbatical, and at the Centre for Population Studies, Umeå University on October 13. Earlier, on September 10, he presented a paper entitled "Socioeconomic Status, Mortality, and Longevity in Historical Quebec and Saguenay: Testing the Fundamental Social Causes Theory" at the Stockholm Unit for Demographic Analysis. This was an expanded version of a paper presented on August 4 at the session “The Emergence of socioeconomic differences in Mortality, 18-20th century” for the World Economic History Congress in Utrecht, Netherland.
2009 International Union for the Scientific Study of Population Conference
Roderic Beaujot was chair/discussant of the session on “Men and children: childbearing and childrearing” at the meetings of the IUSSP, Marrakesh, September 2009.
Alain Gagnon organized two sessions during the conference: “A historical demography of epidemics”, which he chaired, and “Spreading the disease: the demography of diffusion and transmission of contagious agents in the past.”

Roderic Beaujot was a member of the Organizing Committee of the 25-29 August conference in Quebec City of the Association Internationale de Démographes de Langue Française, on Démographie et Cultures and chaired the session on "Contrastes de Genre et de Génération"
International seminars of the International Union for the Scientific Study of the Population (IUSSP)
Alain Gagnon was invited to present his paper "Are there trade-offs between fertility and survival to old ages? Evidence from three large historical demographic databases" at the "International Seminar on Trade-offs in Female Life Histories", Bristol, United Kingdom, 23-25 July 2008 (organized by the Panel on Evolutionary Perspectives in Demography of the IUSSP).
Canadian Population Society
In June 2008, Alain Gagnon was elected Councilor of the Canadian Population Society. At the meeting of the Society (held on June 6th), he was nominated Vice-President of the Federation of Canadian Demographers (FDC) for the incoming year. The FDC is an organization created through the joint initiative of the Association des démographes du Québec (ADQ) and the Canadian Population Society (CPS). The objectives of the Federation are to promote research and the scientific study of demography throughout Canada, to foster cooperation and international exchanges on questions of population and development, and to enrich the knowledge of Canadians on population questions.
The Emergence of Social Difference in Mortality Seminar
Alain Gagnon organized, with other members of the Panel on Historical Demography of the IUSSP , the seminar “The Emergence of Social Differences in Mortality: Time Trends, Causes and Reactions”, which was held in Alghero, Sardinia, Italy, 29-30 May 2008. He also presented a paper entitled “Was old age mortality lower among men from the elite in pre-industrial Québec (1700-1750)?” at the seminar.
