At the 10 July 2007 meeting of the Executive Committee and the 28 September meeting of the Leadership Group, considerable time was spent deciding on research committees.
It was decided that there would be four areas, which was subsequently
expanded to six thematic committees:
1. Aging and paid work (including the concept of "work ability" and older workers in paid employment)
2. Caregiving and social participation (including caregivers at risk
and aging adults at risk of social exclusion)
3. Health over the life course (including the changing nature of the elderly population)
4. Families (including low fertility and sustainable population)
5. Immigrants and migrants: opportunity structures, cohesion and contexts
6. Aging, lifelong learning and life course flexibility ( including life long learning and how it relates to work and health)
Also note that:
-the theme of inequality runs through each of these domains
-immigration themes also cut across the other themes
-we seek to include/collaborate as appropriate with some people from the Canadian Labour Market and Skills Researcher Network
-this is to be seen as an inclusive list of topics
What the committees are to do:
-monitor the research that is being done, including data development questions, and interested journals
-monitor the people involved, the relevant policy partners (key players in terms of researchers and policy sector - internationally and at various levels of government), and the agencies that fund the research
-monitor the key policy issues being debated or that should be developed
-create networks and synergies to further the research, the exchanges (knowledge mobilization) and the links.
-include in the activities student training and student and faculty exchanges.
Leadership, committee members and establishing the committees:
- We will be proactive, but we are also looking for volunteers who would want to be involved in these substantive committees or take leadership roles.
- The Executive Committee will need to take responsibility for establishing the leadership structures and annual budgets of each committee.
- The Cluster Coordinator will provide administrative support for the committees.
- The first task of the committee is to establish a fuller description of the domain of the committee, taking advantage of the mission statement and the description of research areas as specified in the grant proposal.
- At the time of the mid-term review of the cluster, decisions will be made regarding continuing with these committees or establishing new committees.
