This August, MA student Annaliese Pope will be attending classes on autonomous government, women in autonomous government and the Intercontinental Gathering for Humanity and Against Neoliberalism in a Zapatista community in the mountains of Southeastern Mexico. She has received an invitation to partake in these courses and events from Subcomandante Insurgente Marcos and Subcomandante Insurgente Moisés of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation. This year marks the tenth anniversary of the autonomous Juntas de Buen Gobierno, or "Good Governments", in the Zapatista communities that were formed after failed negotiations with the Mexican government following the 1994 uprising. Annaliese will be discussing the Zapatistas, autonomous government and her experience at a Sociology Brown Bag Event this December.
